It's progress, though. [Feb. 28th, 2008, 01:35 pm]

If you didn't know about Stuff White People Like, now you know.

And, if you didn't know about Stuff Educated Black People, now you know.

But, it's ok if you didn't know about the latter. It's actually a little embarrassing. The "About" page spells it out:

This blog is an answer to Stuff White People Like. People are just as curious about Black people as they are about white people. However, there are two types of people in this world–the educated and the uneducated. As an educated Black person, I will shed some insight on the things we like. However, this is all to be taken lightly–they’re only jokes! But most of the stuff is TRUE, so check back everyday to see if I post something that describes you. Leave me a comment, I’d love to write about stuff my educated readers like.

I don't think this person is joking because almost every person I know writes like this. Uppercase the "B" in "Black" to show how "educated and liberated" they are. Half-stepping by adding a disclaimer when publishing obsolete stereotypes born from misplaced racism.

As if racism is something that can be excised or cured.

A large part of the original appeal was the unapologetic and "scientific" voice. It parodied any ethnography written in the late 1800s and early 1900s. (Though, they weren't called that then.)

Who wants to help me write Stuff That Poor People Like? I've got a few ideas to kick it off:

  • Walmart.
  • Drugs.
  • Welfare.
  • Crime.
  • Socialized healthcare.
  • Prejudice.
  • Gangster rap.
  • Babies.

Though, I'm still debating between the terms "poor", "uneducated" and "lower class." Which has the most firm empirical grounding?
